Assignment 1 : Artist Research

Dorothea Lange (1895-1965) and Aaron Siskind

Dorothea Lange is an American photographer born in 1895. She mainly does photography of people, with most being black and white bust shots. Despite doing so, she did not classify her pictures as art, as she took them with intention of it to affect social change during the Great Depression era. All her images were taken with the intention of bringing awareness to those who were suffering.

Her pictures all follow a similar trend of being taken close up to the person, this then creates a high focus on the person, who is the main subject of the photo. The focus on the main subject shows what emotions they are feeling at that moment, with the black and white emphasizing the hopelessness of these people.

Aaron Siskind is an American photographer born in 1905. Siskind focused on abstract photography, which shows in his series Tabernacle City: a series taken on the architectures in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He took his photographs at angles that would look strange from a regular person's point of view. He would also zoom in on certain parts of his subject, altering what the original object/building was.

In the following images, it is hard to work out what is exactly in the picture. Though they are part of buildings and our everyday lives, Siskind altered our perspective of those surfaces and objects to create a piece of art that is interesting for the viewers to look at.
