Assignment 2 : Motion/Self Portraits & Artist Research

Motion Experiments

Self Portraits

I didn't have a tripod, so finding tables at the right height for my pictures was a struggle. It was frustrating at times when the picture didn't turn out right, because then I had to go through the process of adjusting the camera, pressing the button, running into the picture, waiting until the countdown was done and finally hoping that the picture turned out better. It was easier to take self portraits with the help of various reflections, like mirrors and such, since I could see myself better and the process wasn't as lengthy.

Artist Research

Vivian Maier's work was not discovered until after her death. Photography was a way of expression for her, as she worked hard as a nanny during the day. She shot thousands of pictures that were mainly self-portraits, and they're mostly pictures taken from a mirror or another kind of reflection. She rarely smiled and showed an unreadable expression in her pictures, showing how unknown her life was when she wasn't a nanny since while she worked she must have been smiling often because she worked with children. Her photography represented the duality in her life.
